The latest issue (325) of Bath Life magazine just landed on my doorstep and features my article with Bath Life entitled ‘Websites and houses – they’ve more in common than you think…’
Below is the copy from the article seen on page 59 where I discuss the design process for creating an industry leading website using a freelance graphic designer and developer.
Philip Field has been designing websites since setting up his own graphic design business in 2006. Having recently moved to Bath, Philip now operates both as a freelance graphic designer and photographer, working for individuals, start-ups and SMEs.
When asked “What makes a great website?” Philip has an interesting analogy that might just prove useful if you’re in the market for a new website.
“Building a website is much like building a house. If you’re after something special then you’d seldom employ a builder to do the whole job. Instead, you’d first seek out a great architect to fully understand your vision and requirements. It is their job to then exceed these dreams and develop an idea into a wonderful final design. Only when the plans are signed-off would you then assign a builder to construct the house (overseen by the architect). It is this exact process that a great website should follow except in this case, the architect has been replaced with a dedicated graphic designer and the builder with a specialist web developer.”
The idea of employing a separate designer and developer may sound expensive, but Philip explains that receiving the very best in website design doesn’t mean breaking the bank.
“We live in a connected world where highly talented freelancers work daily with one another through the Internet. Combining these specialist skills is a powerful combination and with no expensive business premises to cover, superb and highly effective websites can be created at very affordable prices.”
There’s also no need to worry about managing lots of people, as Philip describes through his own experience.
“When you use a freelance designer like myself, I am there to act as your personal in-house creative. I’ve formed great relationships with my clients over the years by offering a friendly, plain speaking (no techno jargon), start-to-finish service. When it comes to websites, I endeavor to meet up face to face and fully understand your requirements. I’ll then head off and digitally produce several concepts that within a couple of weeks will be presented to you. From there, the chosen design will be developed until finally a complete page-by-page preview of your website, both for desktop and mobile, will be delivered. Once signed-off, I will then issue the design to one of my trusted web developers to build the website to the very latest web standards. The entire process is project managed by myself until the site is launched in its full glory. On-going, all websites are designed to allow easy and full client access for updates and both myself and my developers are all locally based.”
Philip’s clients also agree with glowing 5 star reviews all around. Jack Cooper of Sands of Luce Holiday Park says,
“Phil has a very professional approach to his work. His natural creativity and highly developed understanding of web site design has resulted in a beautiful and efficient web site perfect for our needs. His services come highly recommended.”
