Photography Basics

Photography Basics workshop

If you’re just looking to get into photography or have had a camera for some time and struggling to understand all those buttons, a photography workshop is a great place to start.

As an award-winning professional photographer, I was drawn initially to take pictures by my love for travel. Being able to create a memory of my experiences was a huge draw and my passion for photography grew as I discovered I could capture moments that would otherwise be missed in the blink of an eye. However, in order to snap these moments, I first had to master the basics of photography to ensure I could correctly expose and take sharp, aesthetically pleasing images.

My aim with photography workshops is to pass on my skills so you hopefully come to love photography as much as I do. I do this by making the workshops as practical as possible with 1-on1 tuition out and about in Bath. Exploring the manual settings on your camera, I’ll teach you about the exposure triangle (ISO, shutter speed and aperture), spotting good lighting and how to correctly select the right settings for the right situation. We’ll then apply these skills to what you’re interested in. If its portraits of your family, taking images of the beautiful Bath scenery or close-up macro images of insects, I’ll show you how to get the most out of your camera for your specific interest.

Once you’ve learned the basics of photography, the world really is your oyster. It’s then taking these skills and practicing – you’ll be amazed at how quickly you can jump from shooting very average images to ones you’d be proud to hang on the wall.

For those interested in looking to develop their photography skills further, I offer an Adobe Photoshop & Lightroom workshop where I show you how to edit and get the most out of your images.

Workshop rates

All my classes are run privately on a 1-on-1 basis and charged at £45 per hour (no VAT applied).

For new users, an initial session lasting 3-4 hours is usually best to discover the basics and then after some practice, a further series of 1-2 hour sessions can be booked to develop specific skills. However, please get in touch to discuss your exact requirements and I’ll be more than happy to advise on the time and cost needed to achieve your photography aims.

“Philip is a really empathetic photographer. I found I could work with him and he worked with me, removing all my phobias about how terrible I usually come out in photographs. I’m thrilled with the result.”
